About
Keri’s spontaneous and instinctive style was developed through her desire for each of her pieces to be entirely unique. By incorporating seemingly random efforts in her sculpture, she portrays her subjects as if they are wild and free. These candid works bring together simple materials, heavy textures, and neutral tones. By utilizing multiple materials in her mixed-media sculptures, Keri hopes to connect with a wider audience. People can often relate with at least one of the materials she has used; such as copper wire, glass, limestone or paper, among many others.
Keri is largely inspired by nature. She admires the beauty of natural imperfection, and believes that imperfection is necessary for any object to be real. Her unrestrained style allows her to translate this ideal into her artwork. She enjoys creating lifelike sculptures of animals, plants and their environments. Her work is often accompanied by an underlying lesson about her subject, through which she hopes to raise awareness for overlooked environmental issues. By striving not for replication, but for a better understanding of the imperfections found in nature, Keri strives to instill a sense of compassion and interest in her audience.
Statement
Honeybees and their distinct behaviors have become a recurring theme within my work. Being the most influential pollinators on our planet, honeybees are a critically important species in many ecosystems. Tragically, honeybees are currently experiencing a rapid population decline due to anthropogenic causes such as loss of habitat and the use of harmful pesticides. Raising honeybees as a child instilled a passion for these unique and beautiful creatures within me, and ultimately lead to their presence in my artwork. With hopes of enlightening others about these issues, my sculptures express the natural beauty and wonder of the honeybee, the hive, and beekeeping culture.
